WESTERN KENYA SANITATION PROGRAMME (WKSP)

Overview: RTI International, the lead and managing partner of the USAID Western Kenya Sanitation Project [WSKP], engaged PES to provide support in conducting a scoping study for financial institutions and SACCOs for sanitation and hygiene financing in Siaya, Busia, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii and Migori.

Outcome: PES developed the scope of approach to map out, identify and engage with the respective households and financial institutions. PES undertook a review of literature available and produced the knowledge summary report, which informed the focus of the questionnaires and study. PES then drafted and submitted required documents for the Amref ESRC approvals. PES conducted county introductory meetings and established networks at the head office and branch levels of both bank and non-bank institutions including SACCOs and MFIs. Upon receipt of approval.

PES conducted the pilot of the tools, revised it based on the pilot outcome then conducted KIIs with the sampled financial institutions/SACCOs, SMEs, Government Departments and Development Partners in the 8 counties. Concurrently,

PES facilitated the training of household enumerators, pilot of the tool and revision.

PES then conducted household interviews in the 8 counties in Western Kenya.

PES developed initial draft of the scoping report for review and feedback and participated in the validation workshop for presentation of the findings. PES also tabled draft financing mechanisms to address the gaps within the market. In close of contract, PES submitted the final report.
